Ombudsman - this is someone whose job it is to deal with complaints that people make
Financial - things related to money
Independent – when someone is independent it means they are not linked to or controlled by anyone
Dispute – a dispute happens when people do not agree about something or have a difference of opinion about something
Resident – someone who normally lives somewhere e.g. a Jersey resident lives in Jersey
Consumer – someone who buys something (goods ) or uses a service eg hairdressing; taxis
The Financial Ombudsman Service (F.O.S) is an independent service for dealing with disputes between customers and firms offering financial products such as pensions, shares, bank accounts etc.
A Financial Ombudsman for the Channel Islands has been established and it is possible for Jersey residents to seek help in Jersey with disputes with local financial service providers.

The Jersey Financial Services Commission is the body locally which watches over and regulates businesses in Jersey which offer financial service products. They do not act as an Ombudsman though in settling disputes.
