LOCAL INFORMATION 11.1.1.L2 Extent: Jersey 1. The Shelter Trust was formed to provide shelter for people in the island, who are homeless, for whatever reason, and at the same time to provide a facility for persons found drunk and incapable in public places, as an alternative to the penal system. 2. The emergency shelter is situated at Aztec House 35-37 Kensington Place. Accommodation for 46 people is available in single rooms. Persons seeking shelter must have lived in Jersey for five years, although in cases of need, they may be able to offer a bed for a maximum of three nights. The rent charged is £102.50 per week or £14.64 per night. 3. An additional facility is the Drunk and Incapable Unit. The Unit provides a place of safety for four people. Access to the Unit is from Lewis Street. 4. The St James Street Project hostel at 29 St James Street can accommodate up to 14 adults in single rooms. Clients can usually retain their bed and must be in receipt of an income. The rent charged is £102.50 per week. 5. 19 Midvale Road has 17 bedsits for the homeless who are preparing to return into the community. The rents charged for the bedsits are based on the maximum rental payable in the public sector for bedsit accommodation. 6. Jersey Association for Youth and Friendship 8. The JAYF runs hostels catering for young people who are in work and between the ages of 15 and 21. Applications for admission can come from the Childrens Office, Constables of the Parish, Ministers of Religion, the medical profession, childrens homes or anyone who knows of a deserving case. 10. The main and most important pre-conditions for admission are (a) proven 5 year residency in the island (b) a genuine desire to sort out any outstanding addiction problems (c) any existing alcohol problem must be capable of self management. £100.10 per week [wef 1/11/09]. Those with 5 years residency or more may qualify for Income Support Benefit if they have no or low income. St Marks Adolescent Centre20. Run by the Children's Service, the hostel is situated at 24 St Marks Road (telephone 725297) and provides accommodation for homeless young people in the sixteen to eighteen age group.
