LOCAL INFORMATION 10.2.57 Extent: Jersey 1 Alzheimer's Disease is a physical disease which causes a progressive decline in the ability to learn, to think and to reason. 2 It is the commonest form of dementia with the next most common cause being multi-infarct dementia. One of the first signs being short term memory loss. What is the cause 3 The cause is unknown. However there is an increased risk with age. What is the prevalence 4
What is the treatment 5 There is no curative treatment at this time. Patients are normally seen by Dr Wilson, Psychogeriatrician. If the client is looking after somebody with dementia or believes that s/he her/himself may be suffering, they should discuss the matter with a GP, health care adviser (Le Bas Centre) or The Alzheimer's Society who will refer the person to the appropriate specialist team. Musical Memories, a specially designed programme of music and gentle exercise for people with memory loss and their carers. Held every Friday afternoon from 2 pm until 3.30 pm at St Saviour's Parish Hall. Contact office for more details. Saturday Club at the Poplars Day Centre from 9 am until 3.30 pm. People with dementia can spend the day in a safe and caring environment while joining in various activities. A hot 3-course lunch and transport is provided. Contact Pat Hampson on 07829 700 099. Person Centred Training in Dementia Care for professional care staff – two day course.
