LOCAL INFORMATION 10.2.7 Extent: Jersey --------------------------------------------------- Jersey Blind Society1. Aims to meet the needs of people of all ages, whose visual impairment constitutes a handicap. 2. The Jersey Blind Society owns a purpose-built centre and garden at Westlea in St Martin, where people with a visual handicap can meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays for social activities and lunch. The Society also provides hairdressing and manicure facilities. Transport can be provided. 3. Westlea has two residential units for a visually handicapped person or couple who would like to reside at Westlea long-term. Westlea also has two rooms with bathrooms en suite for use by anybody visually handicapped who would like to stay for either a short or longer period. 4. Telecoms Service for the Blind 6. A free directory enquiry service for the blind and visually impaired exists in Jersey. To use the service, customers are provided with a person PIN or code number which the operator requests when a call is made. The directory inquiry number for the service is 195. Banking assistance for visually handicapped people 7. Most banks now offer large print statements for people who have difficulty in reading the normal bank statements. Braille statements, cheque book template and other services are also available, clients should ask at their bank. |
